Prior to the last prez election, my sanity required that I head to my hideout in Greece (since 1963...). I knew my sanity could not take an election year of Hillary and DT, never wanting to hear his voice, let alone see his face. And I am not so fond of Hillary, although she did hug me once. But that was at my nephew Adam's funeral (he died in Dubrovnik on a Clinton mission to Kosovo). Never mind. The point is that I had to escape. Coincidentally, I was offered a three-month residency in Slovenia by the Friese Museum of Berlin. In rural Slovenia, I accidentally discovered a place where mysteriously I began to draw, totally without warning or inspiration, just passing the time the way I did as a kid. I loved drawing and pushing around paint as a kid; it was a great escape from reality.So when I began drawing again, it came as a surprise, although drawing has always been a primary periodic condition that comes on rather like the common cold. One starts to sniffle, then the sneezing begins. The paper is a hankie on which we blow out our brains.Normally, before I left America, I was not working every day. On the other hand, artists are always working, even when doing nothing but letting their minds wander. In any case, drawing seemed to keep me somewhat sane, even though my moods were rather futile. Who knows why.When Marianne Wagner, owner of the Friese Museum in Berlin asked me to exhibit the drawings I made on their dime, I gave the work a title-Futilism.I was, and perhaps still am, a futilistic artist. It seemed as if I had done everything I wanted or needed to do as an artist, so I was drawing for no reason when I started living here.
